And it came to pass

Why is it that the Book of Mormon which supposedly covers a time period of about 600 B.C. to about A.D. 420 uses Elizabethan English that was popular in 1611?  Well considering that most Americans considered the King James Bible to be holy writ and were used to the style because they had been reading it in school from an early age the writer, or I should say translator, of the Book of Mormon would have wanted to impress his audience with "holy language" that would be too sacrilegious to question.  Throughout the Book of Mormon we see the phrase "and it came to pass" over and over again.  If you had written something this redundant in English class your teacher would have marked it with red ink and suggest you find another way of introducing the next part of your story, but because this is "holy writ" one cannot question the style.  Few talk about a man named Solomon Spalding who had written a manuscript prior to the Book of Mormon that was still at the printers where one of Joseph Smith's friends found work, namely Sidney Rigdon.  Spalding just happen to die before his book of religious fiction could get printed.  He was known for using the phrase "it came to pass" often in his writing as well.  So the story goes that Rigdon got hold of the manuscript and later passed it off to  Joseph Smith who made a few modifications and out came the Book of Mormon.  This is well documented in the book "Who Really Wrote the Book of Mormon" by Wayne L. Coudrey, Howard A. Davis and Donald R. Scales, with forward by Dr. Walter Martin (the author of The Kingdom of the Cults).

Many of early converts were brought over fresh from Great Britain and they were so excited to hear that Jesus had been to the Americas that they were more than eager to embrace such amazing news.  Once they got here they were often stuck between a rock and a hard spot financially.  Therefore they had to learn to fit in with this new found revelation because it would have been too costly and embarrassing to turn back. The Book of Mormon is loaded with phrases plucked directly from the King James Bible.  How would an angel named Moroni use language from a bible that would not come into existence for nearly fifteen hundred years?  Well of course, its magic, completed with translation errors and all.  But Joseph Smith was a fast talker and known for tall tales so he has become larger than life to the Mormons.  Lets not address the fact that the Book of Mormon has been revised numerous times since 1830 to cover up various issues that have given critics reason to scoff.
