Is Mormonism the True Church?
According to Mormon "scripture" in 1 Nephi 14:10 there are only two churches, one is of God and the other is of the Devil.
"And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belong to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth."
"And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belong to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth."
Salt Lake Temple
Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, claimed that all other church creeds were an abomination and their professors all corrupt.
This passage from 1 Nephi presents us with several problems. To start with it is given the date between 600 and 592 B.C. The word "church' had not been used by the Jews during this time because there was no church. It was a term that did not appear until New Testament times during the days of Jesus when the Jews would have been more likely to have used this term which came from the Greek word Ekklesia. Then, the "whore of all the earth" is a reference clearly plucked from the Book of Revelations (17:1, 5) which was written by the Apostle John several decades after the crucifixion of Christ. Only someone familiar with the New Testament would have used such language. This would be like my deceased great grandfather using computer terms only familiar to someone using a Windows operating system. Joseph Smith however was familiar with the New Testament therefore and plucked things from the bible at will to convince his naive audience who would have also been familiar with King James language which would have sounded so holy to them.
The Mormons refer to their church as "Zion" and Nephi claims "And all that fight against Zion shall be destroyed, and that great whore, who hath perverted the right ways of the Lorde, yea, that great and abominable church shall tumble to the dust and great shall be the fall of it." (2 Nephi 22:14) Nephi goes on to write that the false churches will "speedily...be brought low in the dust; they are those who must be consumed as stubble; and this is according to the words of the prophet." (2 Nephi 22:23)
Why are Mormons concerned about criticism from so-called false churches that should have disappeared "speedily" hundreds of years ago?
